The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing – Edmund Burke

Do not be overcome with evil but overcome evil with good – Romans 12:21

There is a rising of a tide of evil, it is lapping at the edges of our western shores, rising up upon our beaches, coming into our homes. We put out the sandbags and recoil from its murmurs, blocking our ears to the cries that get louder. For if we hear them we might have to do something and we don’t want our lovely world shaken. But change is in the air and we are in strange times. People are afraid, they fear for the future, the fear change, the recent Brexit vote exposed that. The world around us is not as it was, there are shifting powers and struggles for control, the spirit of the world knows that his time is limited and will try and deceive as many as he can. He is stirring up dissatisfaction and planting seeds of evil, but he is not the only one sowing seeds of dissatisfaction, for the Lord is also planting those same seeds, He however is looking for entirely different results. He is stirring hearts to awaken them from their slumber, to not be satisfied with the status quo, to see that we have everything we need of life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3) and that we can effect our villages and towns, our cities and our nation. For we in Him have the power to do good, and it is His goodness worked through us that will turn the tide. Kind Canut showed the world that he wasn’t a god, he couldn’t stop the tide, he couldn’t effect his environment. But we through the goodness of God can change the tide. All it takes is good men to do nothing for evil to flourish (Edmund Burke), however let me add to that. For on my own I am not intrinsically good, though I am made in His image and He said that is good, I do not have the ability on my own to produce good works, (Rom 3:10), in fact Isaiah goes as far as to say that our good works are like filthy rags (Is 64:6), the literal translation being menstruation cloths. I don’t have the ability outside of Christ to produce goodness, but in Christ I do, In Christ I am encouraged to do good works that will shine before men (Matt5:16), in Christ there are good works prepared in advance for me (Eph 2:10). It is this goodness, demonstrated to the world that will turn the tide, that will do what Canut could never do. It is His goodness in me that can overcome the evil around me. Do not think this is your own, for that is what the world is guilty of, (Rom 10:3), no, our righteousness and goodness comes from the one who paid the price, who reversed what had been done by the first Adam and established an eternal order for all who would believe. Only in Him can my stained garments be washed, only by His blood can I be as white as snow and can I shine with his goodness and righteousness.
