determination

Paul determined when among the Corinthians to only know Christ and Him crucified.

“For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:2‬ ‭NASB

This passage has often come to mind and I seasonally try the same as Paul but I’m not sure I have the same success as him! The more I think about it the more I see the weight that Paul placed on Christ and Him crucified. He didn’t want to be distracted by other things, he knew that knowing Jesus and the death and resurrection were what would keep him.

It says that he determined, that says to me that he made an effort, he disciplined himself, he took hold of his own will and set it in the direction of Jesus and His death. He isn’t at this point talking about grace, he isn’t saying, well I trust the Lord will do it in me, though he did believe that. He saw his focus on Jesus as his responsibility.

I think part of our understanding is to know what is our responsibility and what is Gods. He is sovereign but we are responsible. We are responsible for what we think about and our inner determinations. Particularly in this season of lent I am determining again to fix my eyes on Jesus, on His cross, on His resurrection, and at the same time as I determine I trust that He will give me grace to do so, that is his empowering presence to do it!

Lord, deliver me from distractions that eat my time and consume my mind. I give you my thoughts and my heart and I determine to know you, your death, your resurrection, I pray for your grace to do so, in Jesus name Amen.
