Yesterday’s prayers

“The pain of today is the answer to yesterday’s prayers” I have heard this said many times and have often quoted it to others, yet in the midst of my own trials the counsel is far from my ears. All I can pray and think about is how to end any pain and bring comfort to my heart. Listening

Henri Nouwen famously said ‘The real “work” of prayer is to become silent and listen to the voice that says good things about me.’ There is something about this statement that won’t leave me. I like it because it defuses the ‘effort’ of prayer. It takes away the strain and puts the emphasis on the Lord. It disarms all arguments that project the Lord as being aloof, disinterested or angry.
