Calling a spade a spade

Before I write what I wanted to write a word about the title. It means ‘to tell it how it is’. There are no racial connotations and in fact the earliest form of this expression comes from the Greek philosopher Plutarch (he died around 120BC). Erasmus used it in his writings and the expression came to the UK in the 16th century. It is a statement of the obvious, and in its earlier forms it was to call a fig a fig or call a trough a trough… so enough with the etymology of the phrase and rest assured it is not meant for racist purposes.

The Lord said to Joshua, “Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. (John 10:10 NASB)

There is a polar difference between the two statements. What would you choose? To be in the charge of the one who can kill steal and destroy or with the one who gives abundant life? It is a no brainer! Who would choose anything but life? There must be something wrong if you to want hang out with one who is going to kill steal and destroy….they don’t make good friends and they certainly don’t make good babysitters. When you think of it like this it seems so clear. So why do we not ‘choose life’ more often?

The one who kills, steal, and destroys is very good at deceiving…so good that most think he is the one to follow. He doesn’t announce himself as the destroyer, no, he comes in more subtle forms, pervading your thinking and touching society, gradually eroding values so that what is born in darkness is then seen as light. It is the emperor’s new clothes syndrome….where we are convinced that what is good is bad and what is bad is good…it … Read More »

When Paul prays

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, (Ephesians 1:15-22 NIV)

I love this prayer, every time I read it hope stirs in my heart. … Read More »
